Harley Davidson

During WW1 they supplied half their production to the government, over 15,000 bikes, many of which were 61ci J model twins. During this difficult period of time Harley-Davidson equipped many of their machines with military equipment. Harley studied the needs of the military and adopted their motorcycles to meet the needs of the soldiers in the field. Harley established a service school to train mechanics to repair the machines that had breakdowns from a hard and demanding use. By the end of the war, some 20,000 motorcycles were had been used in the war.

1919 W Sport Twin

The horizontally opposed twin sat low in the frame, and had a large external flywheel and enclosed drive chain. The flathead boxer type engine gave nearly perfect primary balance because of it’s engine design and was said to be one of the smoothest running that Harley-Davidson had ever built. Utilizing the engine as a stressed member, the motor was only 6 horsepower, but was comfortable and under-stressed. It only weighted 265 pounds and using a Keystone frame. It had a single casting intake/exhaust manifold which was though to improve combustion by pre-heating the charge as the mixture took a longer trip from the carburetor. A luggage carrier was also standard on the model W and the tires were larger than on previous models. The engine and transmission were mounted in the same cases making this model the first Harley-Davidson twin with unit construction. Though the cylinders and heads were in the same casting, they could still be detached without removing the engine. The screw-in-valve guides were easily accessible for replacement for the valves could also be removed with out pulling the engine. The engine revved to very high speeds. Easy accessibility for maintenance was a major focus for the motorcycle’s design. The Sport also used a fork unlike other Harleys, where the lower links were connected by rods to the upper links using a central spring. The fender was attached to a Merkel-style truss fork, which was stationary as the front wheel moved up and down. Roller bearings supported both the crankshaft and connecting rods and a geared primary drove the wet clutch and magneto, mounted on top of the engine. The fuel tank carried 2.75 gallons (10.4 liters) of gas and two quarts of oil. The only rear suspension was that of the springs under the seat. The horizontally-opposed twin was considered to be an „unusually“ small displacement for Harley-Davidson, though it gained great popularity in Europe. It’s engine revved to very high speeds. Some reached up to 100mph on board tracks. Other than the horizontally opposed engine, the Sports could distinguished by their large external flywheel.

Henderson FLXI Seitenwagen

Introduced for 1920, the all-new Excelsior-built Henderson Model K boasted a 1,301cc side valve engine equipped with forced lubrication, a twin-downtube frame, strengthened front forks and enclosed rear chain. In an emphatic demonstration of the new Henderson Four’s capabilities, Wells Bennett set a new world record on a stock example on 31st May 1922, averaging 65.1 mph for 24 hours, a mark that would remain unsurpassed for the next 15 years.
In 1913, Hugo H. Young and Carl F. Dudte founded the Flexible Sidecar Co. in Loudonville, Ohio, to manufacture motorcycle sidecars with a flexible mounting to the motorcycle.
The flexible mounting allowed the sidecar to lean on corners along with the motorcycle, and was based on a design patented by Young.
His invention employed an ingenious parallelogram linkage that allowed the sidecar wheel to tilt while also acting as a suspension system. Young’s design was patented and the Flexible Side Car Company built its own factory in 1916.
In 1919, the company’s name was changed to The Flxible Co. (still pronounced „flexible“) so that the name could be registered as a trademark.
The Flxible soon established itself as a favorite among sidecar racers.
Flxis were attached to all manner of machines – Harley-Davidsons, Indians, Excelsiors, Hendersons, etc – and before long the marque had countless sidecar racing victories to its credit.
In its heyday the company was the world’s largest specialist manufacturer of sidecars, with a range of race and road models that included single-seater, side-by-side and convertible types.
After low-priced automobiles became available in the 1920s, the motorcycle sidecar demand dropped and in 1924, Flxible turned to production of funeral cars (hearses), ambulances and intercity buses.
The company closed in 1996.

This iconic combination is in excellent condition throughout.
The machine is fitted with Coker 4 x 19 tyres and comes complete with Corbin speedometer, handlebar-mounted horn and spotlight.
